I've heard very good things about this movie and one of my friends has been begging me to watch it, but there was one thing that I was unsure of. I want to know is, can I watch this movie from where I'm at know and not be confused of when the movie takes place in the actual timeline in the story? Right now I'm about to get into skypia and I was just wondering if I can watch this as a standalone movie or is there a certain point in the anime that need to watch to understand film red?

You can, but you should finish Wano arc before.

That's barely starting out on One Piece. You won't understand like 70% of the stuff that is going on as well as you won't have any idea about the characters in the movie which is currently the newest one.

It happens after Wano which is over 700 episodes away on your end so:
-the post-timeskip power system and might catch you off guard unless you get midway into Skypiea first because that's more or less where Haki first showed up in fights aside from the beginning with Shanks
-all the new side characters are from future arcs including half of the crew kek

...but it adds a lot of stuff from before Luffy sets off and it gives Shanks the most screentime he's had in forever and it's not really connected to Wano like the how the rest of the movies are (happens in between canon arcs and has no connection to them) so I won't stop you. And if you do decide to watch, I hope that you'll have a lot of fun and see a lot of things to look forward to as you continue watching!

You’re probably best off catching up with the series, or at least reading up to the end of Wano. The movie expects you to be aware of the content up to that point.

I mean I watched it with some friends in the cinema while having absolutely no knowledge of one piece and it wasn’t confusing or anything. It was decent but most of it was just songs and it didn’t feel like a proper movie.

[SPOILER][SPOILER] would say that after episode 1029-1030/vol104-105 you can watch One Piece Red, however the film used the fact that it is not canon to not worry about where it would fit. It would have to be more or less in the middle of Wano, but the Straw Hats did not leave Wano at any point in the story. The story of the film cannot take place before Wano, since Gear 5 appears in the film, a power that Luffy only acquired after Wano, but it also cannot be after the Wano arc, since in one of the scenes we saw Big Mom alive and well, sending Katakuri to investigate the Elegy Island incident, we can say that One Piece Film Red takes place in a kind of non-canon limbo.

Please don't watch it, the movie isn't that great and it will spoil many aspects of future arcs, power system etc.

In terms of "will you be lost" probably not. But it will definitely spoil some crew members unless you already know who is in the crew up to now. Also each characters' appearance is visually different which may also ruin the reveals in the main show. It will also definitely spoil characters' powers they gained over the length of the show. If you're going to watch it anyway, you should also watch episodes 1029-1030 before the movie because they are filler that give the backstory for the movie. You don't have to watch all the way up to them, just skip to them and watch those specific episodes.

Movie is non canon so there’s no impact on the actually story but I would recommend watching it after wci or to learn about the characters. With slight spoilers on a thing that happens in wano arc

I don't watch one piece, but my fiancé does. I like idols. We saw this in theaters together, and while I didn't know a lot of the characters or lore I loved this movie.

I wouldn't personally recommend it since you're already watching the anime and are only (still) at Skypia.

It WILL spoil you on lots of things (future strawhats, other unknown/new characters, future plot points, new powers/power-ups, etc.).

It would be a totally different thing if you still haven't started really watching/reading One Piece since everything you/one can see in that movie will be completely without context ((maybe besides knowing who the main characters are (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, etc.)) in that way it wouldn't influence your first experience with One Piece and even if you still would be kind of "spoiled" it wouldn't really matter since you either would forget about things and/or you couldn't really comprehend lots of things from the movie.

I also saw the movie in theaters when it was still new/newish with my younger sis and she only knows One Piece on a very surface level (like the main characters/the strawhats and that their pirates and after the One Piece).

If she had been new to One Piece and started reading/watching the anime/manga at that time, then I wouldn't have most likely seen the movie with her. (even if that would have kind of pissed me on lol since I could only watch this movie with my sis (at that time/back then) and since it was her birthday present for me at that time/in that year lol.))

it's standalone it came out during wano so you don't have to finish wano just make sure you watch the episode about Uta so you can understand the story if you watch it. to see Luffys new gear it was like a split second you saw it and it was from the back that was the one to grievance I had. they hyped it up saying we'd see his new gear and it was blink and you miss it moment

You do realize that that person/user doesn't know what the gears are yet?

He's still at Skypia.
