Description
Microspheres containing chromophores have been utilized in an extensive variety of applications, including photonic crystals,[1, 2] biological labeling,[3, 4] and flow visualization in microfluidic channels.[5] In many of these applications, both the photostability of the chromophores as well as the monodispersity of the microspheres are of primary importance. The high photostability, good fluorescence efficiency, and wide emission tunability of colloidally synthesized semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) make them excellent choices as chromophores. Unlike organic dyes, the nearly continuous absorption spectrum of NCs, ranging from their bandgap emission wavelength to the ultraviolet, allows different color-light-emitting nanocrystals to be simultaneously excited with a single light source.
