Your English variety

After the rivers/creeks category discussion ended, I saw your comment: I think of a creek as a tidal inlet, possibly fed by a rivulet, as opposed to a stream, brook, beck, burn or billabong. Curious, if you don't mind saying this about yourself — in general, where are you, or where is this the normal meaning of "creek"? I've never heard of creeks being tidal inlets, so I was a bit surprised by your comment. Nyttend (talk) 20:25, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

Creek in Millbrook, Cornwall

I was born and brought up in southeast England, where the term "creek" usually means tidal creek, and inland watercourses smaller than rivers are brooks and streams. I spent my summer holidays in Scotland, where burn is the common term for streams smaller than rivers.

I spent most of my working life in Canada, so mostly use American spelling. I came across inland creeks in the USA. The word is obviously British in origin, so perhaps was or is used in the sense of an inland stream in some part of Britain. I think that would be rare.

I have retired to a coastal village in Costa Rica, where an estero is not an estuary but a lagoon, emptying into the ocean, often rain fed via very small rios..

Given the many inconsistently used names for moving bodies of water, it seems simplest to use "river" as a catch-all. Perhaps "stream" would be more accurate, but I can't see any chance of getting consensus on that change, or any great value in it. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:52, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
