Nubya Garcia: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
September 16, 2020 | Suraya Mohamed -- Look to the left of Nubya Garcia's Tiny Desk (home) concert and you'll see a hanging plant swaying right above the keys. It never stops moving during the next 23 minutes, and it's for a bizarre reason. Garcia's (home) concert took place on a boat - a first in Tiny Desk history - because she was in between homes. Before the pandemic hit, the London-born jazz saxophonist and composer was booked for an extensive global tour that started in February 2020, and it was expected to continue through the end of the year. Because she was only going to be in London for a very short time, she gave up her flat, planning to stay with family and friends for short breaks. It seemed like a good idea until March, when COVID-19 shut down most of the world and the tour, too.
Garcia and her band are at Soup Studio, a recording facility built on a decommissioned floating lighthouse moored on the River Thames. It's also where Garcia recorded her excellent new album, SOURCE. This set features three songs from the record; the title track starts it off with a reggae, dub vibe. Garcia skillfully uses the entire range of her tenor saxophone, hitting convincing low and high notes with ease and resolve. Throughout the set, her tone is gorgeous, her musical intuition perfect. She projects rich and full melodic lines with refined solos that leave just enough space to take in the expressive sincerity of the music. There are no lyrics but her music conveys a message of staying grounded, being present in the moment and appreciating the comforts and feelings of what it means to be home.

Aside from the first class performance, props to the engineer's for a stunning recording
Lol this type of comment is on every single musician performance on RUclips: THE REAL MVP IS THE SOUND ENGINEERS 👨🏼💻 haha 😂
I CAN HEAR EVERY SINGLE INSTRUMENT, ufffff the mixing 🤤
Ya I agree
@@AustenSummers because it's true. A lot of live performances sound like trash in a tin can on RUclips. The sound engineers make or break a live recording.
Seriously 😳
NPR showcasing the powerhouse UK Jazz scene on Tiny Desk is what the world needs right now!!
We need Kaamal Williams in here
Can you recommend more of those artists to us? haha, I´m in love with the music coming from there atm
@@JuanDiegoCruz Ezra Collective. Nerija. KOKOROKO. Alfa Mist stuff is cool. Portico Quartet. Mammal Hands. Some preposterous talent among these.
The comet is coming.
Moses Boyd, Yussef Dayes
what a drummer
I know man! Like how he adds casual ghost notes and rolls. Also props to the one who mixed this, cause it sounds awesome
Yes! I been googlin... just a dude from London working the scene from what I can tell. He's friggin great though. So much talent in the London jazz scene at the moment it's incredible.
and that bass tone
Dutchies will call him Bram Krikke
@@matinx64 and he adds all those tasty chops while still maintaining IN THE POCKET, to me that's the most outstanding part of his playing
I've watched this several times and I'm just noticing the backup vocalists are the amazing saxophonists from Kokoroko. Sensational!
the pianist is the Ezra collective's pianist too !
... and back ground singer Cassie Kinoshi is also the bandleader of no-less-amazing SEED Ensemble.
Don’t forget Nerija
the smooth voices catching my ear.
the first sax scream.
the warm contrabass.
the sharp drummer.
the shy pianist that goes berserk.
This is so good...
Sooo am I the only one who clicked to see all the plants 😍
No, you are not alone ;) The music is good too though :)
@@katiecsoka3768 would you rather never to be able to see or touch another plant or never to be able to hear music again?
@@Peace-qm2sp hahaha , easier question please :)
P plants shmants
Me too, but the music is AMAZING too!!
I swear to god, Sax is the most soul binding instrument ever. Every single sax player seems one with their instrument.
listen to brazilian arrocha its got sax
I'm not in a place where I can play sax frequently as I like. A piece of me feels missing with out.
I completely agree 🤩 I've always loved the saxophone and I hope that one day I can learn to play it 🥺
@@timetravelingjukebox the sooner you pick it up, the better. I started at 23 and love it as a creative outlet
Shout out to the seventh talented member of this incredible musical group... the sound engineer!! That double bass be booming throughout. Love it!!
Right? That bass is POWERFUL. And we can actually hear it. 😊
@@WayneE42 I thought it was an electric bass at first.
Beautiful
Her sax is bigger than yours :P
hola masego
yes masego!!!! so much waves to transend....always one love!
Haha I was thinking about Masego when I saw the Sax, only to find him in the comments section while scrolling
U!
The jazz scene of London is amazing
You’re welcome
Absolutely beautiful! This is my first time coming across Nubya and I have never been happier; that's the great thing about Tiny Desk it's a constant plug. I've literally listened to this 6 times in a row and it's getting me through my assignments. It feels like my eardrums are getting a massage.
Same !! Chills
You might enjoy sons of kemet as well. 🖤
The two singers and keyboard player are great musicians as well in their own right. Check out Kokoroko Afrobeat Collective: Colonial Mentality. Look it up here on youtube. Cassie Kinoshi (the singer in white) is an alto sax player and has a dope solo.
YES !!!!!! pulling me through

Ayyyyyyyy we viking this morning! Haha ❤💚💛

Beautiful intro to a new day
dated smooth jazz and reggae? not sure about this man....
My morning feels better already.
CANNOT believe this was recorded and filmed on a boat. amazing work.
that must have been wavy af doing music on a boat.
@@fkeita67 I didnt notice at first but there is camera bob
Nice af boat...
Who knew the River Thames was so violent! The gentle sway seems to fit the reggae vibe. Such nice chord progressions.
Who said modern music was devoid of musicianship or creativity? Not me (now).
@@cosmicrider5898 and a swinging plant
Every time I come back this tiny desk it reminds me of something I read where it stated that music originated as a way for us to connect and communicate with the earth/spirit. listening to this makes me feel as if i was invited to a birthday party for the universe and this was the music being played
What a cool comment! Birthday party for the universe💯🎶🥳🥰
Beautifully accurate
Beautiful feeling, thank you
I've flirted with listening to jazz a few times over many decades, but these past 5 years have seen a huge amount of tasteful talent emerge, particularly from London. It's a golden age, no less.
those plants were chilllllllling
The air must be so clean haha.
Hahahaha yes
🤣🤣🤣🤣
the clean in there is so thick even the potted gotta swang
Yasssssss 🙌🏻💃🏻
Raggae jazz. Amazingly refreshing 🎷
Check out the band 340ml
It's Fusion of the best kind for m, yes indeed.
Exactly that! What I didn’t know I needed in my life til this! Lol 🙌🏽💯
@@baxxchoabi4369 thank you, i missed these guys when they were around and they somehow still sound nostalgic to me
The most interesting drumming I have heard in a very long time. Such beautiful rhythmic sensibility.
Look up karriem Riggins too
because you've never listen DUB music..
Only a drummer would know how to describe it that way lol.
INDEED❕❕❕❕✍️
I'm glad you enjoy it. Just want to mention that this drumming style is like 50% of reggae dub music, with the other 50% being bass. It's very common in this genre. The jazzy parts reminds me of the style of Alfa Mist, check that out if you haven't.
This whole thing is pure class. big ups to NPR for featuring such a diverse range of music and putting jazz right next to pop. Also it's so cool to see singers trading bars like that. Nubya is a what jazz music needs.
Her quietness and conter- entertainer vibes brought me so much peace. There is reprieve in the absence of speaking, sometimes--it gives you the space to go within and feel.
Her tone is just so good. Honestly, it almost sounds better than the album version of these songs.
I feel that way about a number of Tiny Desk Concerts.
Josh Rogosin is the man!!!!!
NPR really needs to release albums under NRP Studios! It's not fair to my ears that these only live on RUclips!
That's wahat I noticed right off ... L💖ve !!@
My thoughts exactly!!
The level of creative greatness coming from the London hub is unreal, Joe Armon Jones on the keys here in this setting also. Ezra Collective what's gooood, KOKOROKO on vox. What a VIBE.
Wow
you KNOW!!
Yes!
London has been pumping out great music nonstop for like the last five years. It’s definitely become one of the worlds center for creative music right now
@@coreyshafarman8918 ...always was! Take Loose Ends for example
Tiny Desk has done it again 🌟 Love being introduced to all these talented artists and expanding my musical taste. Nubya and her band were 🔥.
You should check out the keyboardist, Joe Armon-Jones! He's also part of Ezra Collective. Fire!
@@yousnasserous Will do👍Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
@@cotinaspann9475 Richie Seivwrigh and Cassie Kinoshi as well - they are part of KOKOROKO, and Kinoshi is the band leader of SEED Ensemble, who released a great album last year. Plus, Nubya released an album with Kinoshi and others as NÉRIJA back then, too.
@@yousnasserous Also features on some tracks on Oscar Jerome's album, my other favorite album released in August ;) ((+on a track on Moses Boyd's great album from earlier this year)
I'm glued to the drummer man! You can tell he's really talking to both of them. Kinda teasing and taunting them sometimes, inviting them to play with him. I love it man. The faces he makes are awesome.
And that bass line is so silky smooth and captivating at all times. Really holding everything together like being enveloped in a giant soft warm blanket that vibrates.
This whole band is phenomenally good, every piece.
Beautiful as always. The fire and the ice of Nubya Garcia.
BTW, The two ladies singing background vocals are Badass hornswomen in their own right! The UK Jazz scene currently is genuinely a collective in the truest sense of the word.
how on EARTH can there be any dislikes on this, this is possibly one of the most incredible musical performances, visual performances and recorded performances I've seen on RUclips!
...obviously lost souls, duncan! incredible music, incredible performers.
no content bot.
They must had a bad day!! it's so great play!
it's youtube's algorithm putting automatic dislikes on random videos. for business, a bit like the stock market
They were so excited that they accidentally clicked like when their phone was upside down
This makes me feel a bit optimistic about humanity. I just fell in love.
Love when Nubya kneels down to let her bassist take the spotlight. That just says it all 😇
So humble and elegant ✊🏿💯❤️
A woman's touch
This is by far the best tiny desk concert I’ve seen in my entire life
There is only one problem in this video: it ends.
Amazing musicians and Nubya is like a fan of herself, jammin' all the time and making us wonder to be there, dancing with her. Maybe someday...

Tiny desk on a boat.

...and that's the truth Ruth.
Drummer was good yes, but the best drummer ive seen on tiny desk is in Jonathan Scales Fourcestra video, the drummer goes wild its so good check that next!

I'm a 62 year old white guy who lives in New Orleans and I am totally in love with this woman and her music.
This is so underrated and absolutely gorgeous - she killed it
Omg, the drummer!!!😍😍😍 He killed it! There’s something about a man that knows how to keep the pace and time...💫 Mesmerizing💯 The whole set was fire!🔥🔥🔥

1:12 in and I'm already thinking, "What rock was I living under to not know about this?!" Haven't been this excited to finish a video in quite a while!
Following her for some years. One of my favourite albums of the year!
I mean this is what life is for.
Nobody: doesn't touch anything
Chill AF Plant in the Macrame Can: *vibin in nonstop for 23 minutes*
Me: cannot stop noticing that the plant does not swing in time with music except for at 11:35 - then I'm wondering..if the plant is already moving when they get in there, aren't they then vibing with the plant? Okay. Now it all makes sense. Thanks for the content. :-)
russell zauner amazing 🤭🌈⭐️
Exactly
They are on a boat :)
do NOT make me post im on a boat clips ha ha ha
but that only reinforces my point that they're vibing around the plant not the plant vibing with them so they won't always match everything exactly because they're subconsciously pulling visual meter off the plant in their peripheral vision as it's the only furnishing moving on its own, at least from the frame's perspective lol
I watched this whole thing without realizing they were on a boat but in all fairness I've been spending a lot more time visiting The Void since lockdown lol it's odd that I don't remember anything BUT the plant now
Wow - never seen a womban play tenor sax so unbelievably joyfully! What soul!
What a fabulous piano solo at 17:20! I never heard anything quite as exiting...

I love this reggae jazz feel. I love playing my tenor sax. It’s definitely a feel of connection 💛. I love all saxophones, but the tenor is definitely my favorite.
Hands Down my favorite NPR Tiny Desk EVER... This is real Jazz Ladies and Gents (with a touch of reggae)
I couldn’t agree more!
The music. The space. All love.
More amazing young musicians! I hear real heritage in Nubya’s sound. The Shorter influence is there but she’s got her own commanding, deep saxophone voice. I’m so glad I found this!

It's all about that bass! Who is with me starting at 11:37 where we go on a magical ride on the bass line descending into pure perfection kicking off into space for the rest of the band!, especially the sax booster rocket launch into infinity and beyond. Talk about setting the table. Will have to invite to dinner next time.

Sound so similar as KOKOROKO. I like it a lot too. Thx tiny desk for give us always good things
The background singers are 2 of the 3 horn leads in Kokoroko, so it's getting there.
Two members of KOKOROKO are here!
There’s a great bit at around 18 minutes where the pianist is playing a mad solo but there’s a rest: but his hands keep twitching with eagerness to hit the next note. Fabulous!
British jazz at its best and hats off to the sound engineer for an incredible organic sound. Highly impressive!!

That piano solo at 17:55 is insane!!!
It really is
14:29 that solo gives me goosebumps! No messing around, straight to the core.. Beauty!
You know when you just start listening to a song, and you get goosebumps and tingles like, 30 seconds in. That's Nubya for me!!!
Everything about this set is pure magic. The sway of the boat, the plants, the chemistry, and Nubya's tone is brilliant. Thank you
