From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of Professional Social Workers and Development Practitioners (APSWDP) is a non-profit organization based in Chandigarh, India, focused on social work and community development. Registered on December 1, 2014, under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, APSWDP connects social workers and development practitioners to address issues such as poverty, health, education, and environmental sustainability.[1]

History

[edit]

APSWDP began as an online forum, the "Alliance of Social Work & Development Practitioners," launched on January 26, 2014, by social workers including Vivek Trivedi.[2] Initially popular among students of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Chandigarh, it formalized into a registered society following a workshop on March 29, 2014, held for World Social Work Day.

Activities

[edit]

APSWDP has conducted several community programs, including:

  • A 65-day relief effort during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, distributing food, chyavanprash, and honey to over 5,000 people in Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation.[3]
  • Aid to Kashmiri migrants during the 2020 lockdown, providing essential supplies.[4]
  • Environmental initiatives, such as a 2023 e-waste management workshop with the Climate Change Cell and Global Youth Federation.[5]
  • Vocational training for over 1,200 women in sewing and entrepreneurship skills.
  • HIV/AIDS prevention programs for high-risk groups, supported by the Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society.[6]
  • Disaster preparedness training for local communities.

The organization has partnered with entities like The Climate Reality Project India and Chitkara University for various projects.[7]

Recognition

[edit]

In August 2020, APSWDP was recommended for a commendation certificate by the Chandigarh Administration for its COVID-19 efforts.[8] It also received the Best Practices Award for Social Development in 2022 from Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO)[9] and a National Award for Women Empowerment, though details of the latter’s issuer are unspecified in sources.
