- Summary claims both "fair use" and pre-1923 publication, both incompatible with each other. Pre-1923 publication is not substantiated with any evidence, especially considering the subject was president of a college until 1931. GrapedApe (talk) 11:41, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- similar photo from same photo op credits Associated Press. We hope (talk) 17:27, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Can you clarify? The images you found are originals showing front and back without a notice. But you said there was "no proof that it was not copyrighted." Are you requesting that I do another search? If it was copyrighted without a notice (unusual for a typical press photo), it would have been renewed in 1978. --Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 18:10, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- It's hard to see how a search could have been done without knowing the source of the photo. We hope (talk) 18:36, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- There is a full keyword option, with similar search ability as a Google's: - Searches word(s) anywhere in the record; - Retrieves records with at least one of your search words; - Use + before words that must appear in every record retrieved; - Use ! before words that must not appear in any record retrieved; - Use ? for truncation: photo? finds photograph, photographic, photographer; - Use "" to surround exact phrases: "war of the worlds"
- For a photo with famous people, a keyword search would obviously find them. --Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 18:53, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is how Associated Press registered its copyrights for photos for July through August 2007. The title is "Associated Press Database July 07 to Aug 07" and is described as "Group registration of an automated database entitled Associated Press News Photographs published updates from 07/01/2007 to 08/31/2007; Representative publication dates July 28, 2007; August 4, 2007; August 6, 2007 updated hourly." The authors were described as "The Associated Press, employer for hire; Citizenship: United States. Authorship: Text, Photograph, compilation. A.J. Mast, Aaron Ontiveroz, Adam Bird and 578 others. Authorship: Photograph." This covers over 575 items in bulk. We hope (talk) 19:07, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- A bulk copyright like that, with no ability to later search for a particular item unless the author was included on it, could make any valid registration useless, or at least defective, one would assume. But it would certainly be a nearly complete defense to any infringement. In any case, there was no notice, which is absolutely required for protection, in order to notify others. --Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 19:34, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- The uploader is clearly not the copyright holder of the medal design; that would be the International Olympic Committee, or the artist. Sandstein 22:21, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- The person who submitted the photograph to OTRS is clearly not the copyright holder of the medal design; that would be the International Olympic Committee, or the artist. The OTRS release, which I have read, is not applicable because in it the submitter only confirms that he took the photograph (of which this image of the medal is apparently an extract) himself. That does not however change the fact that this is a derivative work of the copyrighted medal design. Sandstein 22:24, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
