I use it and am making custom tools for faster asset integration with another custom engine. Spine works great in Godot and it's pretty easy to work with. Overall I'm making 3 separate tools to make a game with Spine integration all in Godot and it's awesome.

Spine is not a bad piece of software, let's be clear. The problem with Spine is its price.
Plus it has an annoying revenue fee that is highly discouraging.
It very well screams "the software is only ours and we're very jealous and avid about it".

I'm glad that Toon Boom considered Godot. I would have expected them to just integrate with Unity like Adobe Animate and Moho does. So it's great to see more support for our open-source game engine.

The idea of this Toon Boom integration sounds great, but... an annual subscription of $1,051 USD is insane (Harmony Gaming is just Harmony Premium).
I wouldn't even pay that as a professional.
OpenToonz project management + dragging exported files into Godot with your mouse is free and looks to have all the same advantages.
If you factor out the extremely prohibited cost, yes it looks great. Who is going to use this though? Toon Boom is aimed at major Western animation studios over individuals, so what company is negligent enough to pay outrageous fees for Toon Boom subscriptions but also choose Godot over Unity and Unreal? It's a really bizarre mismatch unless Godot really is being embraced by enough AA+ budgets to justify this.

Not sure how combining the two into one software is better than using them separately. In fact, separating the pipeline into different tools in this case can actually be better because it lets the art team use different drawing and animation tools as long as they make sure to export the assets in a similar format. Moreover, I suspect it would require the software to be heavier (how much memory does Toon Boom take? I'm not familiar with it). Are they offering something more that wasn't in the video or isn't immediately apparent?

    Toon Boom is so expensive...
If it's just going to be making it more convenient to make games with Godot... and ultimately, make an all in one solutions for 2D art and animation integration into a game, despite like 3 or so different free solutions cobbled together allowing for the end result...
Then like, the price tag they are gonna be asking for...may not be justifiable, even if it saves some time, unless it's like a huge studio that can afford the kind of subscriptions they ask for...
But like, nah. I sure can't.

as someone who has gone thru the toonboom game pipeline (at least for Unity), there's nothing you will actually miss. Their tool set just added an extra step to the import process because of the annoying way their program handles files. You had to either save a scene for each individual animation or you had to use scene markers to break them up for import.
At the end of the day it was just easier to import .png sequences straight into Unity.
Youll be just fine using Moho. Just use .png sequences.

I am little confused, what am I buying by using toon boom instead of just using Godot.
because it looks like a asset flip
of free godot assets in exchange for a subscription and loss of IP.
honestly a subscription and no loss of IP but with full hand hold tech support for godot would be worth it for a lot of people but I doubt it would be profitable when someone says I paid you 10 a month and I want full AAA cyberpunk and I want it with in a month because that's when I am giving up the subscription.

    • @chamutalzered7468
      @chamutalzered7468 День назад

Because they are super specific and make the engine a lot heavier. Part of Godot's draw is the fact that it's lightweight and you can add things to it if your game needs it. It would make more sense to publish those features as addons, this way you could choose to use them per project and keep the advantage of a lightweight tool.
